Buckwheat honey is a monofloral honey produced by honey bees harvesting and converting the buckwheat flowers nectar into honey. Buckwheat honey should be dark.
Buckwheat honey is not as sweet as traditional honey. It's also higher in certain antioxidants, so it might actually be better for you than other, sweeter types of honey. Buckwheat is rich in vitamins and is considered a very healthy food, so it makes sense that honey made from buckwheat would also be good for you.
It is a great and much cheaper alternative to Manuka Honey. Some studies have shown that the antioxidant activity of buckwheat honey exceeds all of the other honey types in the world (including manuka honey!) Drinking a mixture of buckwheat honey and black tea boosts the level of antioxidants in the body resulting in better gut health and enhanced food digestion. Buckwheat honey has higher contents of sugars, proteins and total phenols but a lower content of MGO than manuka honey. Buckwheat honey contains abundant minerals involved in a number of vital functions of the human body as does manuka honey, and has even higher contents of Fe, Mn and Zn.
Buckwheat honey is a great all-natural sweetener for any of your meals or deserts. You can mix it into oatmeal, pancakes, waffles, smoothies, or baked goods — the possibilities are endless. For sore throats and colds, you can swallow honey alone or mix it in with a warm herbal tea.
